THIS & THAT
Ron Aerts
Kayak live FOH-mixer. Oops, sorry for the jargon. In theaters Front of House (FOH) is any part of the theatre in front of the proscenium arch. In concert and PA applications it is generically used to describe anything in the audience area.THIS & THAT
Sytze Broersma
One of three members of Dutch band De Kast that in November 1999 invited Kayak to be their guest on ‘De Vrienden van Amstel Live’. This generated a number of events that ultimately led to the release of ‘Close To The Fire’, Kayak’s first new studio album in nineteen years. Syb (lead vocals), Sytze (backing vocals) and Peter (acoustic guitar) join Kayak on the studio remake of ‘Ruthless Queen’, the bonus track on the album. Without this invitation ‘Close to the Fire’ would probably never have happened.THIS & THAT
Hans Bunt
Mixing sound engineer on Kayak’s live album ‘Chance for a LIVE Time’, which was recorded during the band’s 2000 ‘Close to the Fire’ tour. Mixing was done at NOB Audio Studio 1.THIS & THAT
Pierre Geoffroy Chateau
French born EMI-studio sound engineer of the first three Kayak albums and several songs from ‘Starlight Dancer’. ‘Mireille’, the instrumental piece on Kayak II, was named after Chateau’s daughter, born around the time when this album was recorded.THIS & THAT
Ruud Davris
Stage director of the ‘Merlin - Bard of the Unseen’ tour. Ruud has his own company, LiveExpressions, specializing in shows and events.THIS & THAT
Carwin Gijsing
Carwin was the fourth ‘member’ of the project called ‘Ten Ride Ticket’ that in 1971 produced a tape of home recorded demos - the other three being Ton Scherpenzeel, Pim Koopman and Johan Slager. Like Ton and Pim, Carwin was also a student at the Hilversum Music Academy, studying trombone and piano. On the demo project he sang, played trombone and piano on the songs.THIS & THAT
Hans van Hemert
Produced the first Phonogram demos for the band that would become Kayak in 1972. As a result Phonogram wanted the group to record some tracks written by Hans van Hemert before they would sign them. The band refused and the Phonogram deal was off, after which Kayak recorded three albums for EMI. Four years later Kayak left EMI and were signed by... indeed, Phonogram.THIS & THAT
Frits Hirschland
Kayak’s manager from 1973 to 1981. There are many stories about him, most of them probably not one bit exaggerated. Hirschland was a creative genius when it came to ideas of promoting the band and making lucrative deals, but ultimately led the band into a chaotic financial crisis. He died in 1998.THIS & THAT
David Ireland
English singer/songwriter for whom Ton Scherpenzeel in 1978 produced a single called ‘Zoo Games’. He is the only non-Kayak member (besides the author Harry Mulisch) to co-write a Kayak song, ‘May’, from the album ‘Starlight Dancer’.THIS & THAT
Neil Kernon
Sound engineer on the album ‘Merlin’, recorded at the Soundpush Studios, Blaricum.THIS & THAT
Jack Lancaster
English producer and former member of the band Brand X, whose production assistance was called in for the album ‘Starlight Dancer’.THIS & THAT
Andrew Latimer
Andrew Latimer, guitarist and founding member of the legendary band Camel, can be heard on ‘Close to the Fire’, all the guitar parts on the track ‘Full Circle’ are his. Ton Scherpenzeel was Camel’s keyboardist in 1984, and also contributed to Camel’s recent album ‘Rajaz’. Latimer returned the favor by offering to play on the Kayak CD. Worth mentioning is that Kayak and Andrew never met in the process. A rough CD-R mix of the track was sent to the USA (where Andrew lives), and a few weeks later Kayak synchronized the guitarist’s efforts to their basic tracks.THIS & THAT
John Leckie
Together with Pierre Geoffroy Chateau, John Leckie from Great-Britain was the studio sound engineer of Kayak’s second album.THIS & THAT
Gerrit Jan Leenders
Kayak’s first producer. He produced the first three albums for EMI as well as ‘Merlin’. He now works as a business consultant in Belgium.THIS & THAT
Dennis MacKay
English producer of Kayak’s commercially most successful album ‘Phantom of the Night’.THIS & THAT
Jean-Michel Marion
French bass player and a member of the line up that made the first demos for Phonogram with Hans van Hemert in 1972. This formation only played live once or twice (as Alta Quies).THIS & THAT
Alan Mason
Label manager for Janus, the American record company that released several of Kayak’s albums in the States. He introduced Camel and Kayak to one another by sending each other’s material to Andrew Latimer and Ton Scherpenzeel, who eventually joined Camel in 1984.THIS & THAT
Wayne Neuendorff
Sound engineer on the album ‘Periscope Life’, recorded at the Village Recorders, Los Angeles.THIS & THAT
Patricia Paay
Patricia Paay sang the vocalise on ‘Patricia Anglaia’ from Kayak’s third album ‘Royal Bed Bouncer’. Composer Pim Koopman was so enchanted by her vocals he even decided to name the basicly instrumental track after her.THIS & THAT
Alan Parsons
Remixed Kayak’s first album, ‘See See The Sun’, in the Abbey Road Studios, where he was working as an engineer.THIS & THAT
Gijsbert Perlee
Gijsbert Perlee was the player (or should one say driver?) of the barrel organ (this one was called ’de Flamingo’) that was used on ’Mammoth’, by far the most unusual instrument ever to be heard on a Kayak song. Barrel organs those days (1973) were still played manually, which meant that Perlee (of the famous Amsterdam family of barrel organ players) had to start to turn the instrument’s wheel about ten seconds before the actual recording had to begin, basicly just hoping the instrument’s motor would have reached the right speed (so the right tempo and pitch) at the desired spot. In the end Perlee (and recording engineer Pierre Geoffroy Chateau) managed to do get it - more or less - done. One other memorable fact about the recording was that the barrel organ was too big to pass the studio doors, which meant that Perlee had to stay outside the studio on the street with his instrument, to do his overdubs.THIS & THAT
Hans Philippo
Lead singer for the band Europe, which released one album. In the chaotic times around the break up, in which nobody really knew what was going to happen, the band (that was to become Europe) played a few concerts under the name of Kayak. Hans died in May 2000, one day prior to the release of ‘Close To the Fire’.THIS & THAT
Peter van der Ploeg
Three members of Dutch band De Kast that in November 1999 invited Kayak to be their guest on ‘De Vrienden van Amstel Live’. This generated a number of events that ultimately led to the release of ‘Close To The Fire’, Kayak’s first new studio album in 19 years.

Without this invitation ‘Close to the Fire’ would probably never have happened.THIS & THAT
Arthur Pollini
Erroneously named Arthur van Pol on the album sleeve of ‘Close To the Fire’, Arthur Pollini worked with Ton, Pim and Rob Winter on the 1995 demos. Arthur was to become the bass player of the project but his participation got restricted to some vocal contributions when these demos found no record company release. He can still be heard on the album as many of the original vocals were used in the final mix.THIS & THAT
Chiel van Praag
Played in Kayak’s predecessor High Tide Formation. He brought the band to Phonogram/EMI’s attention. Chiel has become a well-known presentor in Holland and owns a succesfull artist and booking agency.THIS & THAT
Ronald Prent
Sound engineer on Kayak’s studio ‘live’ album ‘Eyewitness’, recorded at Wisseloord Studios, Hilversum.THIS & THAT
Gesuino de Rosas
When asked to play a few songs at an Award Party for film director Paul Verhoeven in Paradiso Amsterdam in June 2004 (because in 1981 Ton Scherpenzeel wrote the music score to his movie ‘Spetters’ that was performed by the band), Kayak had to find a replacement for guitarplayer Joost Vergoossen because neither Joost nor Rob was available that night. Joost suggested to ask his colleague, Limburg-based guitar player Gesuino de Rosas.THIS & THAT
Dick Scheepbouwer
Main live sound engineer for Kayak since 1977 until the band broke up in 1981.THIS & THAT
Jan Schuurman
Sound engineer on the album ‘Merlin’, recorded at the Soundpush Studios, Blaricum..THIS & THAT
Holger Schwedt
Sound enigneer on Kayak’s 2000 comeback album ‘Close to the Fire’ and ‘Night Vision’, mixed at Down Under Studios, Hilversum.THIS & THAT
Marc Stoop
When Kayak was asked in 1999 to be guests of De Kast in ‘De Vrienden van Amstel Live’, drummer Pim Koopman was unable to participate because he lived in Ireland at the time. Marc Stoop (with whom Ton had already played in the revived band Earth and Fire during the late Eighties, and who can be heard on many of Ton’s recording productions like Youp van ’t Hek and Kinderen voor Kinderen) was asked to be Pim’s one-time replacement.THIS & THAT
Ab Tamboer
Drummer for a brief period around the breakup. He can be seen as Kayak’s drummer on a video done for a Rome TV program after the split. On that occasion Hans Philippo mimed Edward Reekers’ voice on ‘Merlin’.THIS & THAT
John Tilly
English producer/engineer. Engineered ‘Phantom of the Night’ after having been called in by then-producer Dennis Mackay, and co-produced ‘Periscope Life’. He still works as a producer/engineer in Holland.THIS & THAT
Alex Toonen
Lead vocalist for the band For Absent Friends, when in 1995 he was asked by Ton and Pim to do the vocals for demos of the band that later became the Kayak ‘reunion’. A copy of the master of these demos (with many songs that eventually found their way onto ‘Close To The Fire’) is now circulating on the Internet. Record companies’ responses to these demos were not very encouraging, and soon the project was gathering dust on the shelves of Ton’s studio.THIS & THAT
Alan Ward
Sound engineer on Kayak’s fourth album ‘The Last Encore’ which was recorded at the Morgan Studios in Brussels, Belgium. He can be heard saying ‘all right lads, give us an earful’ during the intro of ‘Love of a Victim’.THIS & THAT
Frank Winkelman
Kayak live FOH-mixer. Oops, sorry for the jargon. In theaters Front of House (FOH) is any part of the theatre in front of the proscenium arch. In concert and PA applications it is generically used to describe anything in the audience area.THIS & THAT

Frequently Asked Questions
• Are all Kayak albums available on CD?
• Are there any midi files of Kayak available?
• Why do people abroad get bonus tracks? Isn’t that
unfair?
• Your website looks strange in my browser. How
come?
Q: Are all Kayak albums available on CD and where can they be found?
A: All original Kayak LP’s have been released on CD, but some of them are only available as compilations. ‘Starlight Dancer’, ‘Phantom of the Night’ have only been released as a 2CD called ‘Three Originals’ (together with ‘Periscope Life’, also released separately with two bonus tracks). Kayak have never understood why the best sold Kayak album ever (‘Phantom of the Night’, went platinum in Holland!) was never released as such by Universal, but there’s not much the band can do about that. Record companies have their mysterious ways...
Many online stores offer Kayak albums, most of them being Dutch. We are advised that www.groove.nl handles orders from all over the world. International sites like amazon.com. offer a wide range of Kayak CD’s. And at ebay.com you may find rare releases, second hand material etcetera but the buyer should be aware that often enough illegal bootlegs are offered here that on first sight can hardly be distinguished from the original. Especially East-European offers are suspect. If in doubt, ask the dealer for the label and CD-number.
Finally, if you have the opportunity to go to a Kayak concert, usually you will find a Kayak merchandise stand at the venue, where most of the albums can be purchased- and if you don’t mind to wait a few minutes after the show, have band members sign your copies.

Q: Are there any midi files of Kayak available?
A: No official Kayak midi files have been made, but some midi files are available at the Kayak Club.

Q: Why do Kayak releases outside Holland contain bonus tracks? Isn’t that unfair to the fans who bought the original Dutch version?
A: Some ‘foreign’ record companies demand bonus tracks for a release in their country. For instance, in Japan CD’s are much more expensive than in Europe. With bonus tracks, the Japanese version will be more attractive for Japanese fans, who would otherwise simply buy the cheaper ‘import’ version. Without these bonus tracks Kayak would probably have no Japanese release of their albums at all.

Q: Your website looks strange in my browser. How come?
A: We use CSS stylesheets, so our pages should always look good in Firefox. We managed to get it right for Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6 too, which was quite a hassle because Microsoft ignores some CSS rules. Opera is a bit stubborn too, but we didn’t fix our code for this browser.
If you have a Mac, forget about Internet Explorer. Safari and Firefox will do the job for you.
Make sure you use the latest version of your browser. Javascript should be enabled. If you use a popup blocker it may keep you from viewing, for example, the lyrics pages that you find in the Music menu.
